The AFTV Gossip File: Fashion and Beauty Had a Messy Week

The AFTV Gossip File tracks the week’s loudest verified fashion and beauty conversations—from the Galliano backlash and copy accusations to celebrity wedding looks, BeautyTok refusal, and archive tea.

AFTV Weekly Edit · August 24–31, 2026

The AFTV Gossip File

Ten stories. Eight juicy quotes. Nine loud images. Enough fashion politics, copy accusations, beauty backlash, and celebrity wardrobe changes to keep the group chat employed.

10 stories99 items reviewedRumors removed

Fashion and beauty spent the week arguing about who gets honored, who copied whom, and whether “snatched” has become plastic-surgery shorthand. This week’s celebrity fashion trends came with receipts, not forecasts.

We reviewed 99 items published from August 24 through August 31 across TikTok, Reddit, Instagram, Threads, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Hacker News, and the wider web. Stale posts, generic shopping content, and claims we could not verify did not make the cut. Gossip is allowed to be outrageous. The facts still need receipts. For the technology side of the feed, AFTV’s digital fashion conversations follow the same rule: attention is a signal, not proof.

Views, likes, comments, and upvotes are native platform signals. They are not interchangeable, but they do show where people stopped scrolling.

1Institutional drama

The Met’s Galliano Plan Turned Into a Values Test

The receipt
The Met faced growing backlash over plans to honor John Galliano, reported August 30.

The proposed tribute was never going to stay inside the quiet language of curatorial nuance. The Met Gala adds celebrity endorsement, donor money, couture, and a global photo call. That changes the temperature.

“Words matter, and whom we choose to elevate is a direct statement of our values and what we are willing to tolerate.”

AFTV’s take The Costume Institute can build a serious exhibition around a difficult designer. A gala theme is harder to keep critical once the diamonds arrive. A museum can hold contradiction. A red carpet usually turns it into a dress code. That is why this is no longer only a debate about Galliano’s work. It is a test of what institutional forgiveness looks like when fashion makes it glamorous.

2Copy accusation

Sandeep Khosla Did Not Call It “Inspired”

The receipt
Sandeep Khosla criticized Urvashi Rautela’s 2026 Cannes saree after it drew comparisons with Gigi Hadid’s 2023 Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla look.

Fashion references itself every day. This one appeared to forward the entire address: silhouette, palette, embellishment, and styling.

“If you want to plagiarise and you want to copy, make a better version of what we are doing.”

AFTV’s take Khosla’s line is funny because it skips the polite euphemisms. The problem underneath it is not funny: a celebrity can make a replica more visible than the craft-heavy original. Credit would not have made the red carpet less glamorous. It would simply have told the truth about where the idea began.

3Wedding wardrobe count: four

Claudia Sulewski Had Four Oscar de la Renta Looks. The Dogs Got Bows.

The receipt
Claudia Sulewski and Finneas married in Montecito on August 29. Billie Eilish, Hailey and Justin Bieber, Emma Chamberlain, Nina Dobrev, and Kristen Bell were among the guests.

The bride wore four custom Oscar de la Renta looks: silk faille for the ceremony, liquid satin for the rehearsal dinner, upcycled feathers for the reception, and pink with dove grey for the after-party. The couple’s dogs wore bows cut from the gown fabric. Nobody was pretending this was minimalism.

“There’s something about this dress that just demands a moment of silence.”

AFTV’s take Four dresses could have looked like a costume-change spreadsheet. Instead, the wardrobe had an arc. Even better, the dogs were included in the fabric story. The guest photographs supplied a second show: Hailey Bieber wore citrus green; Billie Eilish arrived in olive corsetry. Coordinated luxury won. Quiet luxury was not invited.

Gigi Hadid Bleached the Feature Everyone Recognizes

The receipt
Gigi Hadid appeared with bleached brows, a red lip, emerald jewelry, and black Saint Laurent lace on the September 2026 Vogue France cover.

AFTV’s take Bleached brows are fashion’s fastest facial renovation. Remove one familiar feature and the same face turns sharper, stranger, and instantly editorial. Hadid has done it before, so this was not a personal reinvention. It was image-making with one small lever pulled all the way down. The Saint Laurent lace and red lip handled the rest.

5Cover move

Dua Lipa Wore the Chanel Jacket and Skipped the Sentence Underneath

The receipt
Dua Lipa posed topless beneath an open Chanel tweed jacket for Vogue Italia’s September issue.

AFTV’s take The styling trick was almost offensively simple: take the house code everybody recognizes, remove the polite layer underneath, and let the jacket do all the talking. Chanel tweed survives because it reads immediately. The image was daring without becoming chaotic. The jacket remained the headline. Dua declined to wear the supporting sentence.

6Retail timing disaster

Target’s Prestige Beauty News Arrived Dressed for a Different Week

The receipt
Target Beauty Studio is bringing roughly 1,600 products and about 90 beauty brands into a more premium in-store concept. The announcement followed a separate retailer controversy, making the timing part of the beauty story.

“It’s Not a Great Week for 90 Beauty Brands to Announce a New Partnership with Target.”

AFTV’s take Beauty partnerships do not launch in a vacuum, even when the press release wants one. Target wants prestige excitement without losing the convenience that built its beauty aisle. Brands want the traffic. Customers now judge a retail partnership as a values decision as well as a distribution decision. Shelf space arrives with context—and sometimes very bad timing.

The rollout also includes Glamazon Beauty by celebrity makeup artist Kim Baker, scheduled to enter Target online and in 611 stores on September 10.

7Beauty backlash

“Snatched” Marketing Met a Very Unsnatched Comment Section

The receipt
A BeautyGuruChatter thread about “snatched” messaging and cosmetic-procedure imagery drew 40 upvotes and 51 comments by August 30.

51 comments40 upvotesCaptured Aug. 30

“These influencers will never gaslight me into thinking this is attractive, lmao. I have no desire to look like this.”

AFTV’s take The thread split over whether every use of “snatched” should count as surgery marketing. That distinction matters. The word came from Black drag and ballroom culture as praise for looking exceptionally good; a contour stick did not invent it. But add bandages, clinical imagery, and procedure jokes, and the message changes. Brands can borrow the word. They cannot pretend the surrounding imagery says nothing.

8BeautyTok refusal

The Beauty Product People Wanted Most Was Permission Not to Buy

The conversation
@liquors.beauty on TikTok

55,641 views6,048 likes68 comments

“Deinfluencing prodotti virali che mi rifiuto di comprare e perché! #deinfluencing #beautynews”

AFTV’s take The caption translates to refusing viral products—and explaining why. That second part is why deinfluencing outlived the trend cycle that named it. Viewers are not tired of beauty. They are tired of being told every launch corrects a flaw they did not know they had yesterday. Refusal has become expertise. For once, the luxury product is keeping the money.

9Fan-cast makeover

TikTok Assigned the Earle Sisters an Olsen-Twins Rebrand

The conversation
A styling wish for Alix and Ashtin Earle

204,274 views13,860 likes31 comments

“I need him to style Alix and Ashtin Mary-Kate and Ashley style”

AFTV’s take This is fan casting, except the role is “more interesting wardrobe.” The idea places the Earle sisters inside the Olsens’ visual language: coordinated without matching, polished without looking arranged, expensive without a logo roll call. The engagement says more than “cute outfit.” Audiences now pitch the rebrand before the celebrity team opens the deck.

10Archive tea

Beyoncé Did Not Announce Anything. Everyone Leaned Closer Anyway.

The conversation
Cultured Magazine resurfaced a clip of Beyoncé and Tina Knowles talking at Luar’s Spring/Summer 2024 show as New York Fashion Week approached.

“As fashion week is fast approaching, here is a look back at Mother (@beyonce) spilling tea with @mstinaknowles at the SS24 @luarworld show.”

AFTV’s take Fashion-week anticipation now runs on archive footage as much as invitations. A two-year-old front-row moment becomes fresh again because the calendar says so. No secret was revealed. Nothing was announced. The clip still did gossip’s favorite job: it made everyone lean toward a conversation happening just outside microphone range. Sometimes the tea is the silence.

The Final Spill

Control linked the week’s biggest stories.

The Met is being challenged over who it elevates. A designer is demanding credit for a copied look. Beauty shoppers are pushing back on the language used to sell insecurity. Fans are proposing celebrity makeovers in public, while old front-row footage returns as new fashion-week currency. That fight over who controls an image also runs through AFTV’s look at Dolly Parton’s fashion legacy: style works best when the person inside it authors the spectacle.

Fashion and beauty still run on aspiration. The audience is simply less willing to accept aspiration without authorship, context, or a point of view. That makes the conversation messier. It also makes it much more interesting.

Research period: August 24 to August 31, 2026. Engagement figures reflect public counts captured during research and may change. Reporting and social posts were checked for date and relevance; unverified rumors were excluded. Archival images are labeled where they do not depict the specific event discussed.
