Sci-fi Clothing You Could Be Wearing in Your Lifetime

Ever wondered what the people of the future will wear? I don’t mean next seasons latest installment of designer fashion. I mean clothes that will have weird and wacky functions that belong in the realm of speculative sci-fi movies, yet have somehow managed to break through into our reality, through the mystical portals of science and cultural influences.

So what can we look forward to wearing and what will this clothing do for us? Well let’s have a quick glimpse into the future of wearables as here are five things you could be wearing in the near and foreseeable future:

1) Non-binary clothing

In the future gendered designs may fade away as more people are starting to identifying as being non-binary. Clothes, particularly children’s brands, may therefore become more standardized to suit a more left leaning political ideology.

Hopefully this means that clothing will not emulate a more bland orwellian looking gender neutral uniform, but will allow people the ability to express themselves however they feel like. I’d imagine it’s also guaranteed that some form of binary gender clothing will also still be available for people to wear. Therefore, so long as the future allows for multifarious modes of expression then it sounds as though one future function of clothes will be to create a more inclusive environment to suit people’s own subjective experiences of gender and identity.  

2)  The evolution of the fitbit

Most people who used the original legacy biometric technology, like the fitbit, felt as though it came up a bit short. A lump of plastic just does not have an ergonomic feel to it and you often forget to even take it out the door with you sometimes.

However, due to future enhancements in technology and in accordance with Moore’s law, you won’t even notice the smart technology you’re wearing as the mechanical components will become smaller and more powerful. Wearables could also come with cutting-edge features on them, such as solar cells and biometric scanners that take your BMI, pulse rate and are also able to detect hydration levels, to keep the body in a balanced state of homeostasis.

3) Post-detergent societies

Washing machines could soon become obsolete in the face of new advances in wearable technology. For clothing material could soon be grown in a lab by bacterial cellulose that gives the clothes a unique ability to remove dirt and clean themselves. So in the future you may never need to buy detergent, have a washing machine or even wash and dry your clothing again…

4) Smart shoes

German researchers have developed shoes that are capable of harvesting energy from every footstep that you take. The researchers have thereafter produced both a shock harvester and a swing harvester which could have a promising potential to help the elderly put on their shoes with a self-lacing mechanism embedded into the shoes itself. However this does not limit the infinite possibilities as to what these kinetic energy harvesting shoes could be put to use as in the near future, as they could potentially power a whole range of electrical devices.

5) Beyond wearables..?

Subdermal implants could replace wearable gadgets as they are appearing to be of growing interest to the news media in the form of radio frequency identification (RFID) tech. This technology boasts that it can purchase items, open doors and access safeguarded equipment like screw drivers, all at the wave of a hand. It therefore appears that the next step in the internet of things is to make humans the target WiFi accessibility.

This would perhaps mean that thieves would no longer just steal your wallet to access your money but would have to use you to get to your bank accounts which could boost the threat of danger to yourself. There are also many other threats that are associated with RFID such as them being difficult to remove, hackable and that the tags could be disrupted and turned off leaving you without any money. So maybe it is best to just stick to the wearables and not the subdermal tech for now…
