The summer is upon us, heavenly bodies adorn the streets and we are all basking in glorious sunshine (for a few weeks at least.) What better way to bring out that summer vibe then a bit of heavy duty military wear?
A practical and long-term favorite of mine are chukka boots. These casual wear boots were immensely popular during the 40s and 50s and have emerged as a fashionable alternative for the urban-suave man or woman. These versatile and light-weight ankle boots have been named ‘chukka’ based on a time period of play in a polo match.
The history of these shoes goes back to the colonial era, when they were used by Polo players in the British Army in India. The modern avatar of the chukka was born in 1949 by Clark’s shoes, when they started making them in suede. These crepe-soled boots were popular among proto-hipsters in the ’50s and ’60s.
How to wear them?
Chukka boots are predominantly a mans shoe, but can and are worn by both sexes. Chukka boots can be worn over almost anything. These range from tailored suits to shorts or even the modern tapered jeans or khakis. Though black remains a popular color, these shoes come in browns and up-to-date colors like rust or maroon too.
If you are looking for some trendy and classy chukka boots, here are three choices that you can consider-
1. Ralph Lauren
The Polo Ralph Lauren Wallingford is bound to satisfy your taste for refined styling. These clean and classic Wallingford chukka boots come in soft calfskin leather. The lace-up construction and leather lining along with lightly padded foot-bed ensures optimum comfort levels. It has a durable sole and is very light weight too.
2. Nike Chukkas
The nike shoes, 6.0 rizal low chukkas help you get fresh from head to toe. The sleek tonal design of these contemporary chukka sneakers comes with leather upper and rubber sole. The heel overlay gives additional support and there is a rand for durability. Other features include compression molded Phylon midsole for lightweight comfort and inner sleeve construction to put off irritation and provide good fit.
3. Clark’s chukka boots
Clarks continues to design and recreate the classic chukkas in new designs, colors and styles to suit the requirement of the contemporary man. You can pick from suede lace patterns or go for classic black in ankle length.
But what to wear with my Chukka’s?
The casual styling of cargo mean you can wear it with anything and sport a rugged or adventurous look. Take a look at some of these ideas to incorporate cargo into your wardrobe and get the look right:
Short cargo skirt
Get into a functional and practical but stylish cargo short skirt like the Zara signature skirt or the Denim & Supply fleece cut-off skirt. The Hanes skirt has cargo pockets and is made out of soft, stretch twill that ensures all day comfort. The pockets stretch to accommodate a surprising number of things. Since a short cargo skirt is meant for casual wear, you can wear them with casual but form-fitting tops like long sleeved t-shirts or short tank tops. For chillier weather, team with a tight fitting sweater.
Maxi cargo skirt
The maxi cargo skirts have a very versatile and feminine silhouette. I bought a great maxi cargo skirt from Topshop last summer and with a bit of customising from a friend at Wiseman Clothing I had an unbelievable fit that I rocked the whole summer.
They have more pockets than normal skirts, but be warned – don’t stuff them with too many things or they’ll bulge out and spoil the look. The taupe jersey maxi skirt from Wyatt’s is lightweight with an elasticized waist band and drawstring ties. The cargo pockets have flaps and decorative brass stone buttons and give the skirt a fun element. The denim Roamans Parachute cargo skirt is the skirt to go with when you want to sport that new attitude.
Women’s safari jackets
They make for superb comfort and rugged elegance. The Bush poplin safari jacket is great protection against rain and wind, insects, thorns and bushes on your outdoor adventures. The princess seams give it a neat look. It has epaulets at the shoulders and strategic pockets to accommodate your needs. It looks stylish and cute and though made of poplin, it’s not too heavy. Wear it cinched at the waist to look more stylish. Or wear it with jeans or a knee-length skirt or a flowy dress.
Keep away the wedges and heels and wear your cargo skirt or jacket with ballet flats or boat shoes. Accessorize with chunky necklaces or wooden bracelets.
Incorporate a cropped military jacket
Cropped military jackets are on the list of hottest trends for Summer. It is a long running trend which has changed fashion in several ways. These jackets are pretty versatile which means you can wear them with different clothing items to look stunning. Here are some combinations you can try with these jackets.

This is a good combination if you are going for a visit to a friend or relative. You can relax and hang out with friends with this outfit on weekends.
- Wear cropped military jacket or military ladies jacket with jeans. You can wear the latter one if you don’t like the cropped look much. Go for ladies military jacket for a date to the beach. These jackets give you a cool relaxed look.
You can wear these jackets in fall or winters. It’s best to go for warmer ones in the winter. Pair them with skirts to create a chic look. These versatile jackets go well with boots, leggings or a trouser. You can play with your look and choose to look a little different every day.
